India intends to seek the release of eight of its citizens sentenced to death in Qatar. This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic Subramanyam Jaishankar.

He said that he had met with the families of Indians who had been sentenced to death in Qatar. "The Government attaches the most serious importance to this case and fully shares the anxiety and pain of the families [of the convicts]. The government will continue to make every effort to release them," the minister wrote on the social network X. According to Jaishankar, the country's authorities will work closely with their families on this issue.

A group of Indian citizens were detained in Qatar in August 2022, allegedly on charges of spying for Israel. The Qatari authorities have not officially released the charges against them. All of them are former members of the Indian Navy, including senior officers who previously commanded Indian warships. Prior to their arrest, they worked for a private company, Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services, which provided training and other related services to the Qatari Armed Forces. As India Today magazine reported, Indian naval officers were involved in Qatar's submarine creation program and are accused by the Qatari side of transmitting this data to Israel.

Last week, the Indian Foreign Ministry issued a statement according to which the Qatar Court of first instance handed down the death sentence to the Indians. The Indian Foreign Ministry said at the time that it was shocked by the court's decision.
